St Michael & All Angels Steel Band

Freddie was the Band Master, Tuner and Arranger of the St Michael & All Angels Steel Band. The band was founded in 1996 and is made up of young kids from Brent. For 16 years he worked with the St Michael's Youth Project dedicating his time and energy into making young people exceptional musicians and part of an excellent Steel Band. Freddie did this for the love of young people, allowing those from disadvantaged backgrounds to benefit from his tutoring and becoming the best they can be. He said, "the sky's the limit for these young people", and this was definitely true when Freddie taught them.

Freddie taught them classical pieces by Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Strauss, and Elgar as well as a strong repertoire of popular music going back over 60 years in a variety of different styles.

Through his inspiring teaching, they became the first Steel Band to perform at St Paul's Cathedral (twice), many civic events including the Annual Fundraising Ball for the Mayor of Brent as well as opening for Diversity at the Novatel Hotel. All Angels played at the Houses of Parliament, the first Steel Band to have ever played there in history! They were also the first Steel Band in Brent to take part in the Notting Hill Gate Carnival since 2009. Freddie was so proud of his pupils.

St Michael & All Angels Concerts

The band rehearsed and performed regularly at St Michael's Church in Brent. They performed a variety of music for Summer and Christmas concerts every year. St Michael & All Angels Steel Orchestra's management continually thanks Freddie who throughout his whole life, only asked and encouraged young people and children to do their best in all things. The Orchestra contains young children from the age of 5+.

More About St Michael's Youth Project

Through the project programme 'Steel Pan in The Community', young people befriend the community through community performances, at residential care homes and day centres for older people and people with disabilities. They travel and support other voluntary organisations and work in partnership with Voluntary and Statutory sector agencies for the benefit of the wider community. This is now done weekly around the borough and now includes visits to wards at Northwick Park Hospital as well as Willesden and Central Middlesex Hospital. Freddie's work has been recognised and celebrated by a variety of organisations, including Brent's Community Champions and Marsh Christian Trust.
